A pool for koi carp

A pool for koi carp

The single-family home built in 2001 is situated on the border of the green zone in a quiet, rural setting in western Switzerland. The contrast of the soft circle and the straightforward austerity in the facade, as well as the high, narrow windows that alternate with round window hatches on the upper floor, lend the house something special. And so it’s not surprising that the contemporary natural pool, which has been part of the property since 2018, is something else special and guarding a secret to boot: koi fish swim within its waters. Koi carp are one of the most classic species of ornamental fish; their value is defined by their unique coloring, which is what makes them so precious.

Starting point

An L-shaped natural pool is intended to become the core piece of the garden design and subtly enhance the overall architecture. With its modern geometry, today it fits into the garden landscape as part of a generous patio. The black pool is framed by light gray porcelain stone slabs, which were chosen for the entire patio area. The water looks like a picture, with the surroundings reflected over and over again in its dark surface. A heavy granite dragon’s head, a sculpture from China, serves as a waterfall and integrates perfectly into the ensemble. The soothing sound of the water washes over the entire garden.

Plants

The vegetation is restrained, with no exuberance or abundance. Just a few species set the tone and provide a graphic/architectural effect. The Japanese horsetail on the edge of the pool provides the most gorgeous modern accent with its stems. Water lilies are planned to complete the picture later on, along with a few light, airy grass species. Those wishing to cross the pool do so over a concrete path to the patio with seats and a fireplace. Three tall planters filled with miscanthus sinensis create an outer border for the patio.

A pond for koi fish

The owners of the house have a huge passion for koi and wanted a modern pool in the zen style. They settled on breeding koi fish. The pool had to meet certain requirements so that the koi would grow up in the best conditions. The natural pond has to have a water supply and drain system. The water has to be between 150 and 200 cm deep – one koi fish requires at least 1 cubic meter of water. The water’s surface should have both sunny and shaded sections. In addition, carps need company and a couple more members of the same species in the cool water with them. This special pool was brought to life by Semadeni.
