On the green meadow
A natural swimming pond in an agricultural setting.
The lawn in front of the single family home extended southward to the agricultural zone and ends in front of the meadowland in an embankment planed with ground cover. In the east, a cypress hedge lined the property while in the west there was a fence. Today, a natural stone wall rises from the green meadow, marking the property's border to the south. The fence and cypress hedge remain untouched, but a natural swimming pond has taken its place on the lawn: It was skillfully integrated into the heavy natural stone wall made from Jura limestone and framed on three sides with a wooden deck made from thermally modified ash.
Planning and implementation
During the new planning, the commissioned horticultural company had free rein: “We were able to choose the location of the swimming pond, but we immediately agreed to place this on the southern edge. The existing cypress hedge as well as the scented blossoms had to be protected and so we took these elements into consideration in the overall planning. When designing the environment around the swimming pond as well as when choosing materials, it was important to us to find regional solutions oriented on the landscape.” It was also important to the company to view samples of all elements, including the swimming pond.
Chemical-free swimming pond
As a specialist for koi pond construction, Marti Garten AG was able to easily adapt the technology for swimming ponds and rely on the expertise of the pond manufacturer Semadeni AG. “It was important for us that you can see and feel the technology as well as the optimal water quality without chemicals. That is why we first looked at a koi pond together with the client. Then we presented various filter models and filter types, looked at samples of various types of wood for the border and sample stones for the embankment.” After making the selection and following minor adjustments, the first draft was made on paper, including the cost estimate, for the planned project and the order was placed.
The filter system with pump shaft was defined using state of the art technology and it was tailored precisely to the project in cooperation with the supplier. The pond basin was also harmonized with the surrounding area and custom made and delivered by the pond construction specialist Semadeni AG. The swimming pond was equipped with a stair unit as well as underwater lighting, which highlights the pond even when it is dark outside. A skimmer also ensures a clean water surface.
The access road through the agricultural area also proved to be a real challenge as well as the approval of the crossing and the subsequent repair of the construction dirt road. Marti Garten AG: “Our goal was to cause as little damage as possible. We had everything under control by working based on the weather and using appropriate machines.”
